A Great Joy!

And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. (Luke 2:10-11 ESV).

In every church I have pastored Christmas and children seem to have just gone together. There is a contagious joy that emanates from children, especially at this time of the year. The picture I’ve chosen to accompany today’s devotional was taken at Santa Fe Baptist Church in Tennessee. Obviously it is a children’s presentation for Christmas. I happened to be given a “key” part in the production. Now, it may not be exactly accurate in that there likely weren’t any Holstein cows in Bethlehem, or Israel for that matter, at the time of Jesus’ birth. But I think I pulled it off pretty well, especially with my “hat.” It was a great evening of songs and Scripture reading calling our attention to the first Christmas.

Joy is one the great blessings of Christmas. It shows up Christmas services with beautiful music. Joy is in the giving and receiving presents. Joy can be evident in reconnecting with family. True joy is not dependent on circumstances, but is a gift from God even when times are tough. However, whatever the source, joy is contagious. Joy comes with the birth of Jesus because Old Testament prophecies for salvation had been fulfilled. God kept His word and the Word became flesh. This is a reason for joy.

Our reading reminds us that this kind of joy comes from God. The angels called it “good news or great joy” (v. 10). Their message brought the joy of salvation.

However you best express your joy this Christmas, please remember that there are many people who are struggling to find that glimmer of joy in something or someone. They may be grieving, bring them the joy of eternal life. They may be hurting, bring them the joy of an eternity without suffering or pain. They may be struggling, bring them the joy of a companion to help with their burden. We can receive the message of Christmas joy and spread it to those around us.

Look in the manger to see the good news of great joy – a Savior has been born. May that joy touch your heart in a new way today.
