The fear of the LORD is the beginning of
knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. (Proverbs 1:7 ESV).
Today we begin a journey through Proverbs. It is written to give its readers a roadmap toward wisdom. Remember the author of this book is King Solomon who, when told by the Lord to ask for anything and it would be given to him chose wisdom (cf. 1 Kings 3:1-9). In fact, the Lord gave him even more than he asked for. Notice:
It pleased the Lord that Solomon had
asked this. And God said to him, “Because you have asked this, and have not
asked for yourself long life or riches or the life of your enemies, but have
asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, behold, I now do
according to your word. Behold, I give you a wise and discerning mind, so that
none like you has been before you and none like you shall arise after you. I
give you also what you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that no other
king shall compare with you, all your days. And if you will walk in my ways,
keeping my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I
will lengthen your days.”
(1 Kings 3:10-14 SV).
So, when Solomon begins
this book of instructions in wisdom he says, “Fear of the Lord is the
beginning of wisdom” (v. 7). That is
our first step as well. We must begin by having respect for the majesty of God.
We show love for God by following his commandments — not because we “have to,”
but because “get to.” From this attitude comes wisdom.
It is easy to recognize
the power of God. Simply by observing nature we cannot mistake the things we
see as anything but awesome. Springtime growth of wildflowers, sudden thunderstorms
that bring refreshing rain and powerful displays of wind and lightning, and new
life bursting from many species of the animal kingdom all point us to the power
of God. However, do we really see the majesty of God? The fear of the Lord is
rooted in our understanding the majesty of God. This is that settled understand
and conviction that God is both above all and over all. He directs and
determines life with each passing moment. In His grace and mercy, He has
extended forgiveness to us through the work of Jesus, guaranteeing our eternal
life with Him. He has adopted us as His sons and daughters forever. When that becomes
our motivation to obedience, we realize the privilege of following Him. That is
the fear of the Lord. Let’s begin there together in this journey!
