[Jesus
said] “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am
the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.
This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and
not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of
this bread, he will live forever.” (John 6:47-51 ESV).
Today I have reached another little milestone. I am 74 years old. Sounds like a very long time, especially when you realize that means my birthdate was in 1949! However, I can assure you that it has seemed like a “blink of the eye.” Perhaps it was not always that way. It did seem like forever before I’d be able to get my driver’s license. I do remember how long it seemed before I would finish all my formal education and finally get to begin the work God called me to perform full-time. But, as the years passed and all the other milestones were experienced, time lost its quantity and I felt the quality of life as it passed. Mt marriage to Mary, the birth of our children, their marriage, and the birth of their children (our grandchildren) all seemed to be measured by how wonderful these experiences were rather than when they took place. I think that gives us an insight into the understanding of “forever”.
The term
"forever" in the Bible refers to an indefinitely long period of time,
perpetuity, ever, forever, eternity. The Greek word used in these passages is a
combination of the preposition "for" (eis) implying, in this
case, with the word "ever" (aion—age). Jesus said in our
reading today: "I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if
anyone eats of this bread, he shall live forever.” This is the promise to us as
Christians that, if we have accepted Jesus as Savior and Lord, we will live
forever with Him throughout all of eternity.
That simply means that
there will be an unlimited supply of birthdays! I wonder if that means I’ll be
able to have birthday cake forever too? LOL… I hope you are having a wonderful
day today. What we have in front of us as believers is so wonderful it cannot
even be imagined. Enjoy them all. They do pass in the blink of an eye; and,
they last forever!
