“Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements—surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?” (Job 38:4-7 ESV).
I love music. Mary and I usually spend about an hour together in the mornings listening to a few playlists I’ve put together. One of these is “Country Gospel Music”. I love the convenience of being able to tell Alexa to play is and listen to an hour of various artists singing some of our favorite tunes. I must also confess that I am not musically talented in the slightest. I’ve never done more than whistle a tune from time to time. Even then I was told to stop whistling while I was working as it was a distraction to the customers!
Music and song are an integral part of our lives, whether we can sing with the voice of an angel or scarcely carry a tune. According to God’s Word, music and song have been with us since the creation of the world. Genesis 1, the story of creation, is written in verse, like a poem or song. I like to think of the angels joining in with God as they sang this refrain: “It is good; it is very good!” So, today we begin a brief journey “listening” to some of the songs from the Scripture.
This creation song, along with many others, has been incorporated into God’s Word to us. In addition to all the songs in the book of Psalms there are also many other songs and references to singing tucked away in God’s Word. Many of those passages comfort and encourage us. But, most of all, they point us to the one true God, our Creator and Redeemer, who has a plan for our lives.
Today’s reading hearkens back to that first song sung as God created the heavens and the earth. Job speaks of the Master Builder as he lays out the foundation of the structure, checking it with his “line” (a measuring device from ancient time), placed the piers, and laid the cornerstone. It was so perfect, so beautiful and magnificent, the angels could only look at it and sing “It was good… it was very good!”
No matter how your part of creation may have changed since those first days of creation, I hope you will be encouraged to join with the angels and sing God’s praises today and every day. It is still the grand work of our God and stands as a testament to His will and purpose, which is very good!
