Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life. (Proverbs 16:31 ESV).
For many years as I have come to this day of celebration I have written with tongue-in-cheek regarding Mary’s age. Usually I make a remark about celebrating “anniversaries” of her 39th birthday. After all 34 sure sounds better than 71. However, in view of both the circumstances of this year and the incredible resilience, strength, and wisdom Mary continues to exhibit through it all, I think there ought to be a special sense of accomplishment in her age. The quote from Abraham Lincoln in the meme I’ve attached with today’s devotional is apt as I think of the fifty birthdays I’ve been privileged to celebrate with her.
The Scripture I’ve chosen for today’s reading mentions “gray hair.” Well, it’s been a very long time since I seen even the hint of gray creeping into Mary’s blond hair; however, the truth of her crown of glory is evidenced in her life. Neither of us has ever lived perfect lives. However, I have seen in her a righteousness born out of faith and loyalty for our God and our family. Some may call it pride or overprotection. Regardless, I call it righteousness.
Just the other day, as we were watching a bit of news concerning some of the protests and violence across our nation, she remarked at how glad she was that our children and grandchildren were relatively safe. Then the reporter switched scenes to Washington DC and her entire demeanor changed. Since our youngest son lives in DC, she was in full-blown “she-bear” mode. It was almost comical as she began to tell me we needed to go “do something.” I was able to calm her a bit as I reminded her that Aaron is a very mature and capable young man. He is quite able to take care of his safety. Finally I simply laughed and recognized the strength of her love for her “cubs.” That is just a part of living life.
There have been many other times that were not nearly so serious in nature. Traveling through nearly every state in the union and many foreign countries, she has always found an irresistible desire to climb things - trees, walls, the ruins of ancient structures. All of these caused me more than a slight bit of panic, especially as we have grown a bit older. But, that, too, is a part of living life.
Oh, there’s much more to be said than I can in this brief space. Lincoln was right, “In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.” I am grateful for being able to tag along in the journey of abundant living! Happy Birthday, Mary!
