Happy and Blessed - Pt. 22

Princes persecute me without cause, but my heart stands in awe of your words. I rejoice at your word like one who finds great spoil. I hate and abhor falsehood, but I love your law. Seven times a day I praise you for your righteous rules. Great peace have those who love your law; nothing can make them stumble. I hope for your salvation, O Lord, and I do your commandments. My soul keeps your testimonies; I love them exceedingly. I keep your precepts and testimonies, for all my ways are before you. (Psalm 119:161-168 ESV).

Our reading today makes a bold claim: Seven times a day I praise you for your righteous rules (v. 164). Does the psalmist really stop and praise God for his righteous laws seven times a day? To get to the answer to that question we need to understand the symbolism of numbers in the Bible. In the Scripture, the number seven suggests completion and perfection. Actually, the psalmist reveals that praise is always on his lips. So whether he prays seven times a day or continually, the psalmist offers a powerful example for us. Praise for God should always be on the tip of our tongue.

The psalmist has faced numerous difficulties, as we have noted throughout this series. Yet in each case, even as he languishes under the torment of bullies, praise remains on his lips. No, this isn’t the power of positive thinking. It shows that believers who turn to God—even in the most desperate situations—find peace. God promises that he will never forsake his people.

While the psalmist waits on God, he immerses himself deeply in God’s Word. In the process, his love for God’s Word and for God himself deepens and grows. And as God’s Word blossoms in his heart, praise flows from his lips at least seven times a day.

Whatever our circumstances, we too should be growing in our knowledge of and obedience to God’s Word. As we do, our love for God will grow, and praise will be on our lips always!

I urge you to practice the continuous praise of God, regardless of circumstance. Sometimes it is no more than the acknowledgment of an awe-inspiring sight or experience; at other times it may involve more traditional practices of prayer and worship. Regardless of what your method is for praising God continuously, making this the practice of your life will bring you great happiness and blessing!
